Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is a United States Air Force installation in Ohio, formed in 1948 by merging Wright Field and Patterson Field. It is the headquarters of Air Force Materiel Command and one of the largest USAF bases. Foreign Technology Division (later National Air and Space Intelligence Center) and Project Blue Book ran out of Wright-Patterson; the base has been a persistent fixture in U.S. aviation, intelligence, and (in popular lore) UAP/UFO history since the late 1940s.

Notable & intriguing

Wright-Patterson is the institutional home of Project Sign (1947), Project Grudge (1949), and Project Blue Book (1952-1969) — the Air Force’s three successive public UFO investigation programs. Blue Book closed 17 December 1969 after reviewing 12,618 reports, 701 of which it left as “unidentified.”

The base’s “Hangar 18” has been the persistent subject of folklore — claims that recovered Roswell wreckage and non-human bodies are stored there — since at least the 1974 book The Roswell Incident. The base has formally denied these claims; the National Museum of the United States Air Force, the largest military aviation museum in the world, occupies a significant portion of the base.

In 2023 former Air Force intelligence officer David Grusch testified before the U.S. House Oversight Subcommittee that Wright-Patterson was historically connected to a “non-human biologics” retrieval program. The Department of Defense and the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office have denied the claims under oath.
