At approximately 11:00 on 6 April 1966 during morning recess, students at Westall High School and Westall State School in the southeastern Melbourne suburb of Clayton South observed a silver, disc-shaped object descend over the school grounds. Multiple witnesses, including science teacher Andrew Greenwood, reported it landed briefly in a nearby grassed area (the Grange Reserve) before ascending and departing northwest. A ring of flattened grass was photographed by witness Shaun Matthews and remained visible for several weeks. The RAAF dispatched personnel to the school the same day; the investigation file has never been released. Headmaster Frank Samblebe ordered students not to speak about the incident.

Notable & intriguing

More than 200 students and at least six staff members witnessed the object, making Westall the largest mass UFO sighting in Australian history. Science teacher Andrew Greenwood gave his account on the record to journalists from The Dandenong Journal the following week.

A circular area of flattened, scorched grass approximately 9 meters across remained at the Grange Reserve landing site for weeks; the area was cordoned off by men in unmarked uniforms within hours of the event according to witnesses including James Kennedy and Joy Clarke.

The Australian Department of Air’s investigation file on the Westall incident has never been released; a 2014 FOI request returned a single page stating that ‘no records relating to this matter can be located.’
