Failure modes identified and cut

• Vonnegut-imagery accumulation at chapter close (1): The “in a basement in west Asheville there is a footlocker, and in the footlocker there is a manila envelope…” closing was a long comma-and chain by design — kept the structure but broke it into shorter sentences so it lands rather than just compounds.
• Wry-procurement-department register (1): “we do not call our orbital observatories workshops or kitchens” — cut. It was the exact failure mode the user named.
• Ornamental parentheticals (3): “without authorization, remuneration, recognition, or complaint” trimmed to “without remuneration or recognition”; “the institution within which all of this real work happens is also, and has been the whole time, the institution to which…” — “and has been the whole time” trimmed (the also does the work); “in a careful Castilian” lightened to “in careful Castilian.”
• Comma-and chain (1): “the contemplative orders, the chaplain corps, the prison ministries, the hospice services” — kept (it is a load-bearing list of institutional categories).
• Self-aware “I have used the dialogue device sparingly in this codex” aside — trimmed (it was the literary-memoirist mode the user wanted out).
