Failure modes identified and cut

• Ornamental parentheticals (3): “with a kettle on the stove and a window full of maples” trimmed; “the porch on Hilltop Road in Fairborn where, that September, Voss would introduce Carlyle to a young handler he had just recruited from the rememberer pool” — the Hilltop Road clause was a Borges-flavored over-specification; cut to “a porch conversation with Voss in the summer of 1972.”
• Comma-and chains (2): “to fly bombers over Schweinfurt or to teach radar to recruits at Keesler” — the Schweinfurt/Keesler twin-detail was Vonnegut-leaning specificity; cut to “they had been promised when they signed the papers in their early twenties.”
