Failure modes identified and cut

• Vonnegut-imagery accumulation (1): Opening paragraph’s “Wednesday afternoon when the iced americano in his hand was sweating onto the metal table at the precise rate at which his composure was not” — beautiful image, but it accumulated three rhetorical moves (oblique-truth-teller; sweating cup as composure-meter; the Wednesday detail) where one would do. Compressed.
• Comma-and chains (3): “his uncle worked at Area 51, or that he himself was in the room when the disclosure was decided” had four items at the end; trimmed structure but kept content. “deep ice, abyssal water, sub-cratonic basement rock” was kept (load-bearing). “the basalt stack of the Putorana plateau, the deep rock under the Pechengsky borehole, the calderas of the Tibesti, and in the abyssal plain also” — kept as a four-element list because each element is doing work.
• Ornamental parenthetical (3): “Czech, maybe; maybe nothing” trimmed; “a Wednesday afternoon’s good light” trimmed; the “ordered a second cortado, and left” — the cortado was procurement-department-wry, cut.
• Wry-procurement-department register (1): “a hundred bad television shows about people pointing at the sky” → “television.” Kept the rhetorical move; cut the imagery.
