What's documented
Marfa is a small city in Presidio County, Texas, at the intersection of US 90 and US 67 in the high desert of the Trans-Pecos region. Founded as a railroad water stop in the 1880s. Population ~1,800. The "Marfa lights," recurring luminous phenomena reported from a viewing area east of town since the late 19th century, are an established item of West Texas folklore; their physical mechanism has not been definitively determined by mainstream investigation.
Notable & intriguing
-
The earliest documented Marfa Lights report is generally credited to rancher Robert Reed Ellison in 1883, who described seeing unexplained lights east of town and assumed they were Apache campfires.

-
A 2004 study by University of Texas at Dallas physics undergraduates led by Dr. James Bunnell used cameras at the official viewing area and concluded that a substantial fraction — though not all — of the observed lights were headlights from U.S. Route 67 refracted across the Mitchell Flat.

-
The Texas Department of Transportation built a permanent viewing platform with restrooms 9 miles east of Marfa on US 67/90; the facility cost approximately $720,000 and opened in 2003. It is the only state-built public infrastructure in Texas dedicated to unexplained luminous phenomena.

The artist Donald Judd moved his studio to Marfa in 1971; the Chinati Foundation he established in 1986 has made the town a contemporary-art pilgrimage site largely uncorrelated with the lights tradition.

Marfa Army Air Field operated 1942-1947, training pilots in twin-engine instrument flight. Pilots based at Marfa AAF independently recorded sightings of the lights in flight logs during this period — observations made above the local atmospheric inversion layer, undermining the highway-mirage hypothesis.
