04-maintenance — Sagan-shift recalibration notes
Word count: 5095 → ~4945 (light cut; chapter is already the most Sagan-adjacent — mechanistic, citation-rich, fact-driven)
Failure modes identified and cut
- Ornamental parentheticals (4): “the unusually elegant Sumerian phrase about clay and toil” cut; “I have been looking forward to writing for two years and will treat as an aria” cut (the owl footnote should be allowed to speak for itself, not be announced); “in the way a deep-cover field operative also holds down a real job at a regional sales office” cut (wry-procurement-department register); the long Marisol-noticing-awning parenthetical cut.
- Comma-and chains (3): “in rural Wisconsin and in the highlands of Sichuan and on the Cape Verdean coast, by trawlermen and by pediatric nurses, in interviews with researchers who believed every word and in interviews with researchers who believed none of it” - kept structure but cut repetition.
- Wry-procurement-department register (2): the deep-cover-field-operative simile; the “suite 401 of Building C in Reston, Virginia” hyper-specificity at the owl-conference-room.
- Trailing-imagery-chain at close (1): “by technicians who have read the file and who know how the subject folds her hands when she is afraid” — trimmed to “by technicians who have read the file.” The fold-her-hands detail was lovely but ornamental.
What was preserved
- All nine Petri-net states.
- All six steps walked through (Approach / Sedation / Diagnostics / Pineal Recalibration / Memory Overlay / Release).
- All anatomical detail (cribriform plate, ethmoid foramina, calcite microcrystals, piezoelectric property).
- The DMT detail and Strassman / Borjigin / Baconnier citations in footnotes.
- The owl section (Joan Whitfield’s “invention,” all the cross-cultural citations).
- The seven-year cycle math and the “hundred thousand procedures per day” closing.
- All seven footnotes verbatim, including the three-hypothesis Hypothesis A/B/C footnote.
- Both place embeds (Hessdalen valley, Uintah Basin).
Three before/after pairs
1. The “treat as an aria” announcement, removed - Before: “So: once more, and mechanistically. I will name the steps the way the apparatus names them. There will be footnotes. One, the one on the owl, I have been looking forward to writing for two years and will treat as an aria.” - After: “So: once more, and mechanistically. I will name the steps the way the apparatus names them. There will be footnotes.”
2. Pineal cover-function simile - Before: “It is correct as far as it goes — and is also a description of the gland’s cover function, the visible work the operators allow it to do, in the way a deep-cover field operative also holds down a real job at a regional sales office.” - After: “The surface-medical reading is correct as far as it goes. It is also a description of the gland’s cover function — the visible work the operators allow it to do.”
3. Closing flourish, trimmed - Before: “It is not the only one — the operators also work us through climate-scale and culture-scale interventions the codex will address in later chapters — but it is the operation closest to the subject, performed on the subject’s own anatomy, in the subject’s own nostril, every seven years, by technicians who have read the file and who know how the subject folds her hands when she is afraid.” - After: “…but it is the operation closest to the subject, performed on the subject’s own anatomy, every seven years, by technicians who have read the file.”
Coherence check
Spine intact: opening (twelve-to-fifteen-thousand reports) → Petri-net states → walked steps (Approach / Sedation / Diagnostics / Recalibration / Overlay / Release) → cycle math → closing meditation. Each section moves toward the next claim.
Confirmation
- All cosmological content intact.
- All seven footnotes preserved verbatim (especially the long Hypothesis A/B/C one in footnote 6).
Time
~20 minutes.
